Understanding Chord Structure By Garry Jackson With a little knowledge of music theory, you can work out which notes make up a chord, then play that chord on guitar or piano. Lets start with a scale of C major. C D E F G A B C C is the 1st note of the scale, D the 2nd and so on. a major chord is made from the 1st, 3rd and 5th notes of the scale. so C chord = C, E & G ------------- a minor chord is made from the 1st, flattened 3rd and 5th notes of the scale. so C minor chord = C, Eb & G (this is easy to see on a keyboard) ------------- a major 7th chord uses 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th notes so Cmaj7 = C, E, G, B ------------- a 7th chord is made from 1st, 3rd, 5th and flattened 7th so C7 = C, E, G, Bb ------------- a 6th chord is made from 1st, 3rd, 5th, & 6th notes. so C6 - C, E, G, A ------------- a Suspended chord raises the 3rd note by a semitone ( to a 4th) so Csus = C, F, G -------------- You can make the minor version of any of these chords by flattening the 3rd note. For more complex chords the formula is this a 9th adds a b7th and a 2nd a b9th adds a b7th and a b2nd a 13th adds a 6th and a b7th a 11th adds a 4th and a flat 7th You can work out any chord by finding the scale, then adding the scale degrees as detailed above.
