How to see Flamenco in Spain
By El Guapo
Finding authentic Flamenco music in Spain can be surprisingly difficult. It is all too easy to get sucked into some tourist trap, where although the show may be of a high standard, the performers are unlikely to be inspired without the support of a crowd of afficionados. So here are some suggestions for finding the real thing. If it costs more than say, 12 euros it is likely to be a tourist show. The locals won't pay that much. (an exception would be a theatrical performance with a large and famous company). Keep your eye out for flyers posted around town promoting a performance, or ask about in local bars. Be prepared to stay up late. Impromptu juergas (spontaneous parties) tend to start well after midnight! Learn some Spanish. A few words of Spanish and a keen interest will get you into private flamenco clubs. Incidentally, never clap along to the music. In Andalucia Granada, Seville, Jerez, and Almeria are all towns where you are likely to encounter Flamenco puro y jondo (pure and deep). Suerte! |
