Harassed by Charity Collectors
By Eb Scrooge
I am broadly sympathetic to most charities, and realise that they have to raise funds somehow, though I think that many people might surprised at what huge resources some charities have. In the old days, you could stroll up your High Street and there might be a couple of people gently shaking tins, collecting for charity. You could give or simply pass by, as you saw fit. If you gave, you were usually rewarded with a polite 'thankyou', and a badge or sticker to show that you had donated. Now it is impossible to go to the shops without being assaulted by legions of clipboard wielding youths, pretending to be your friend and then trying to sign you up to a monthly subscription to some aid organisation you have never heard of. No doubt a goodly chunk of your contribution goes to these collectors. I have had enough of this, I want to be able to walk unmolested through my town. Now on principle I always give to the tin-wavers, no matter what the cause, and reserve my most baleful glares for the would-be eco-warriors, saviours of the third world, and champions of the elderly. Am I alone in this?
